Why Lincolnshire Is the Staycation Break You Haven’t Booked Yet

Lincolnshire staycation breaks are genuinely underrated. The county has history, countryside and coast in abundance, and a base in Uphill Lincoln puts you at the heart of all of it. If you haven’t considered it yet, this might be the nudge you need.

Mention a UK staycation and most people think of the Cotswolds. Or the Lakes. Lincolnshire doesn’t tend to come up. And honestly? That’s part of the appeal.

It’s a county that doesn’t try too hard. Rolling wolds, an unspoiled coastline, market towns with proper character. And right at the top of it all, perched on a limestone ridge above the rest of the city, is Uphill Lincoln. Two of the finest medieval buildings in Europe standing within a few hundred yards of each other, a cobbled street lined with independent shops, and the White Hart Hotel sitting right in the middle of it.

The hotel has been here since the 14th century. It’s been refurbished, given the only AA 4 Silver Star rating in Lincolnshire, and it still feels like it belongs exactly where it is.

That location does a lot of the work for you. Lincoln Castle is a two-minute walk from the front door. It holds one of only four surviving original copies of the 1215 Magna Carta, owned by Lincoln Cathedral and on permanent loan to the Castle. The full medieval wall walk is up there too. Children tend to find it quietly brilliant.

Lincoln Cathedral is right there as well. One of the finest Gothic buildings in England, and you can see the West Front from the hotel. It’s the kind of thing you stop noticing after a while, until a guest mentions it and you remember how remarkable it actually is.

Beyond the city, the Lincolnshire Wolds are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Take a day, slow down, get a bit lost. The coast is within easy reach too. Skegness if you want the traditional seaside, or quieter stretches around Chapel St Leonards and Mablethorpe if you’d rather have the beach to yourself.

MEHR ERFAHREN

For couples, Lincoln has a natural romance to it. The Bailgate in the evening, the cathedral lit up, a drink at the Colonnade Cocktail Lounge before dinner. At Antlers Restaurant we build our menus around Lincolnshire produce. It’s been named Restaurant of the Year by Lincolnshire Pride Magazine, but more than anything it’s food that reflects where you are. Seasonal, local, well-crafted.

After dinner, the Gibson Club Bar is worth a visit. It’s named after Wing Commander Guy Gibson of the Dambusters’ 617 Squadron. History built into the walls. Good bar, too.

Our suites, including the King Edward Suite and the Brownlow Suite, are designed for nights when you want to properly settle in. And if you’d rather have your own space entirely, No. 6 and No. 7 Castle Hill are self-contained Georgian townhouses with views over Castle Hill and Lincoln Cathedral. Breakfast the next morning, no alarm, cathedral in the window. That’s the idea.

Families are well catered for too. Lincoln is compact and easy on foot, so you’re not spending half the day getting anywhere. Our rooms range from Cosy Rooms to spacious Deluxe options, so there’s something that fits whatever size and budget you’re working with. Did we also mention that kids under 12 also dine for FREE! Breakfast and dinner from the children’s menu is included.

And we’re not standing still. The Aquitaine Spa is open now, with two treatment rooms and a full range of treatments. Construction is also underway on an 11-metre vitality pool, gym and sauna, due to open in early 2027. So if you’ve been before, there’s more to come back for.

Lincolnshire is often called the nation’s larder, and a significant proportion of the UK’s fresh produce is grown here. You feel that in the food, in the landscape, in the general sense that this is a place that provides rather than performs.

51 rooms and suites, three bars, a restaurant, a spa and a location that’s hard to beat. If you’re thinking about a staycation break, it’s worth thinking about Lincolnshire. And if you’re thinking about Lincolnshire, start here.

Frequently Asked Questions

A staycation break is a holiday taken in your own country rather than abroad. It might mean a weekend in a city you’ve never properly explored, a few nights in the countryside, or checking into a hotel that feels nothing like home. All the rest and change of scenery of a holiday. None of the airports.

They are. The UK has some of the finest historic cities, coastline and countryside in Europe, and a lot of it goes unexplored. A well-chosen staycation can feel every bit as restorative as going abroad, often with less stress. The key is picking somewhere with enough to keep you occupied and a base that feels like a treat in itself.

Location matters most. You want somewhere that puts you within easy reach of things to do, but that also feels like a destination in its own right. Beyond that, look for:

  • Good food and drink on site
  • Comfortable rooms with real character
  • Staff who actually care

Awards and ratings are a useful shortcut when you’re narrowing things down. An AA Star rating, for instance, is assessed by independent inspectors, so it means something.

It comes down to intention. A couples staycation is about creating space to properly switch off together, so the details matter more. A room with character, somewhere decent for dinner without leaving the building, a spa if you want one.

At the White Hart Hotel in Lincoln, we have suites, an award-winning restaurant, a cocktail lounge and the Aquitaine Spa. All in one of the most scenic parts of the city. It’s the kind of place that does the work for you.

Start with location. You want somewhere compact enough to navigate easily with children, with things to do across different ages and interests. History, open space and coast is a reliable combination.

Lincoln works well for this. The Castle and Cathedral are a short walk from the hotel. The Lincolnshire Wolds, a National Landscape and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, are close by for walking and cycling. And the coast is within easy reach for a day out. Our rooms range from Cosy Rooms to spacious Deluxe options, so there’s something to suit most group sizes and budgets.

Often, yes. But it depends on where you go. You save on flights, transfers and travel insurance straight away. You also skip the stress of airports and long journeys.

A staycation at a good hotel, with food and drink on site, often works out comparable to a mid-range European city break. And considerably less hassle. Staying at the White Hart, for example, you’ve got Antlers Restaurant, the Colonnade Cocktail Lounge and the Gibson Club Bar all under one roof. No need to go far.

It depends on what you’re after.

  • City breaks give you history, culture and restaurants within walking distance
  • Countryside breaks offer space, walking and a slower pace
  • Coastal breaks combine fresh air with the classic British seaside

A historic city like Lincoln offers a bit of all three. The architecture and independent shops of the city, easy access to the Lincolnshire Wolds and the coast for a day trip. It’s more versatile than people expect.

Much the same as any short trip. Comfortable shoes for walking, something smart-casual for dinner, whatever you need for the activities you’ve planned. The advantage of a staycation is that home isn’t far if you’ve forgotten something. And you’re not restricted by luggage limits either.

Two nights is the sweet spot for most people. It gives you a full day to explore without the first or last day feeling rushed. Three nights works well if you want to properly unwind or you’re visiting somewhere with a lot to see.

At the White Hart, two nights give you time to explore Lincoln, have dinner at Antlers and still feel rested by the time you head home. That’s the aim, anyway.
