Picture this: a full-sized replica World War One tank rumbling through the streets of Uphill Lincoln early on a Tuesday morning in September. It’s not every day you see that, is it?
The occasion marked something special. The Tank Room at the White Hart Hotel had just received World Origin Site status. Lincolnshire’s own Guy Martin arrived, along with his Mark IV tank, Deborah II, to celebrate the site where the military tank was conceived 110 years ago.

The Tank Room: Where Military Innovation Changed Everything
The Tank Room holds a unique place in military history. In the summer of 1915, the Great War had reached a deadly stalemate. Trench warfare was claiming thousands of lives. Something had to change.
A group of military engineers and officials began meeting in secret at our hotel. Their mission? To develop an armoured vehicle that could cross trenches and break through enemy lines. They gave the project the code name ‘tank’: it sounded like water storage, not a weapon that would change warfare forever.
The secrecy was intense. Engineers burned rejected designs in the room’s fireplace. No one could know what they were planning.
From these meetings came ‘Little Willie’, the prototype that Fosters of Lincoln built later that year. And Lincoln went on to produce hundreds of tanks during the First World War. It’s a story that’s central to Lincoln’s tank heritage.

Guy Martin and Deborah II: Bringing History to Life
Why Guy Martin? He’s from Lincolnshire. He’s passionate about tank history. And he’d already built a working replica of a Mark IV tank for a Channel 4 documentary about the Battle of Cambrai.
Martin didn’t create Deborah II alone. JCB, The Norfolk Tank Museum and Chasestead Engineering all helped build this remarkable machine in 2017. Usually, you’ll find it at the Norfolk Tank Museum in South Norfolk. But for this special day, it made the journey to Lincoln, arriving at 07:00 BST to take its place near the hotel.
Stephen MacHaye from the Norfolk Tank Museum put it perfectly: “It’s particularly fitting that today’s unveiling involves Guy Martin. His documentary raised awareness of the tank and its importance to WWI. And he was born and still lives in Lincolnshire.”

The Unveiling Ceremony
Guy Martin unveiled two plaques that day. One sits on the hotel’s exterior: a cast and hand-painted blue plaque that catches the eye of everyone walking through Bailgate. The second lives within the Tank Room itself.
